Our History: From French Engineering Roots to a Global Drilling Group
Foraco International began operations in France in 1961, manufacturing drilling equipment and exporting its technology to Africa and Latin America. The company developed innovative technologies, including some of the first Vibro Percussive (Sonic) drilling systems.
By the early 1970s, Foraco had evolved into an international drilling contractor. Early operations in West Africa included a program to deliver 800 village drinking-water wells in Côte d’Ivoire, followed by large-scale water drilling projects involving thousands of wells in Libya, Mali and Niger.
During the 1980s, Foraco became part of major French industrial and geological organizations, including Elf and later BRGM, the French Geological Survey. This strengthened its technical expertise and international capabilities.
In 1997, Foraco was acquired by its current major shareholders, beginning a new phase of development. Building on its water drilling expertise and strong African presence, the Group expanded into mineral exploration and specialized drilling services.
Foraco’s listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) in 2007 accelerated its international expansion across North America, Australia and Latin America, alongside its established operations in Africa and Europe.
This growth transformed Foraco into a global drilling group while strengthening its capabilities in mineral exploration, deep directional and large-diameter drilling, water, geotechnical and other specialized services.
Today, more than 60 years after its founding, Foraco has delivered projects in over 60 countries. Its history reflects international growth, technical expertise and its teams’ ability to deliver complex drilling projects in some of the world’s most demanding environments.
